Scaling theory of rubber sliding friction

چکیده

Abstract Current theoretical descriptions of rubber or elastomer friction are complex—usually due to extensive mathematical detail describing the topography solid surface. In addition, viscoelastic properties material itself, in particular if is highly filled, further increase complexity. On other hand, experimental coefficients sliding plotted versus speed, temperature parameters do not contain much structure, which suggests that a less detailed approach possible. Here we investigate coefficient on dry surfaces via scaling and dimensional analysis. We propose adhesion promotes dissipation by increasing deformation amplitude at relevant length scales. Finally, comparatively simple expression for obtained, allows an intuitive understanding underlying physics fits data various speeds, temperatures, pressures.

Sliding friction at a rubber/brush interface.

We study the friction of a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) rubber network sliding, at low velocity, on a substrate on which PDMS chains are end-tethered. We thus clearly evidence the contribution to friction of the pullout mechanism of chain ends that penetrate into the network. This interfacial dissipative process is systematically investigated by probing the velocity dependence of the friction ...

On the theory of rubber friction

Rubber exhibits unusual sliding friction. When rubber is slid on a hard, rough substrate, the surface asperities of the substrate exert oscillating forces on the rubber surface leading to energy ‘‘dissipation’’ via the internal friction of the rubber. I estimate this contribution to the friction force and compare the results with the experimental data of Grosch. Because of its low elastic modul...

Rubber friction: comparison of theory with experiment.

We have measured the friction force acting on a rubber block slid on a concrete surface. We used both unfilled and filled (with carbon black) styrene butadiene (SB) rubber and have varied the temperature from -10 °C to 100 °C and the sliding velocity from 1 μm/s to 1000 μm/s. We find that the experimental data at different temperatures can be shifted into a smooth master-curve, using the temper...

Study on the Friction of Bored Cylindrical Rubber Protrusions Sliding on Ceramic

The present work aims at reducing the friction of rubber soles sliding on ceramic floorings. Fitting bored cylindrical protrusions with different diameters on rubber soles was proposed. Experiments were carried out to evaluate the performance of the proposed protrusions in increasing friction coefficient at dry and contaminated floorings. It was found that, at dry sliding, friction coefficient ...

General theory of frictional heating with application to rubber friction.

The energy dissipation in the contact regions between solids in sliding contact can result in high local temperatures which may strongly effect friction and wear. This is the case for rubber sliding on road surfaces at speeds above 1 mm s(-1). We derive equations which describe the frictional heating for solids with arbitrary thermal properties. The theory is applied to rubber friction on road ...
